At UAL’s 2025 Scholars Reception, I had the pleasure of capturing the energy of the evening through my live illustrated portraits. As a fashion and lifestyle illustrator, I thrive on the immediacy of working in real time, and this event offered the perfect setting—bringing together both new and returning scholars in a vibrant, celebratory atmosphere.
Working with Polychromos pencils, I created each portrait within a 7–10 minute window, balancing speed with detail to reflect not just likeness, but personality and presence. Each guest brought their own style and story, and translating that onto paper in such a short time is always an exciting challenge. From bold silhouettes to subtle expressions, I focused on the nuances that make each individual unique.
The reception itself is a highlight in UAL’s calendar, a moment of connection between scholars past and present. There’s a real sense of community in the room—people sharing experiences, ambitions, and creative journeys. Being part of that environment and contributing something tangible for guests to take away makes the process even more meaningful.
Live illustration adds an interactive, personal dimension to events like this. Guests aren’t just observers; they become part of the artwork. Watching a portrait come to life often sparks conversation and curiosity, creating memorable moments beyond the drawing itself.
